DVSA Driving Test Booking Changes May 2026: 5 Steps Every Learner Driver Needs to Know

March 18, 2026 by Viv Dutton

From 12 May 2026, the rules around booking your driving test are changing significantly — and the most important thing to know is this: you are now in control.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is making it illegal for anyone — including driving instructors and third-party services — to book, change, or cancel your driving test on your behalf. This is a significant and we want to make sure you feel completely prepared.

Here are 5 clear steps to understand what’s changing and what to do next.

Step 1: Understand Exactly What’s Changing — and When

There are three key dates you need to know:

  • 31 March 2026 — You can now only make 2 changes to your test booking (date, time, or test centre). This is already in effect.
  • 12 May 2026 — Only you, the learner, can book, change, swap, or cancel your test. No one else can do this legally on your behalf.
  • 9 June 2026 — If you need to move your test, you can only transfer it to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it’s currently booked.

Step 2: Know What Still Counts as a ‘Change’

With only 2 changes allowed, it’s important to understand what uses one up:

  • Changing the date or time of your test
  • Changing the test centre
  • Swapping your appointment with another learner

The good news: if you change both the date and the test centre in a single action, it counts as just one change. Changes made by the DVSA (for example, due to bad weather) do not count towards your limit.

If you use both changes and still need to move your test, you’ll need to cancel and rebook — you’ll receive a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date.

Step 3: Driving Test Booking Changes 2026: Book at the Right Time — Don’t Rush It

With only 2 changes available and waiting times of around 20–23 weeks in many areas, booking too early is a real risk. If your test arrives before you’re ready, you have limited flexibility to push it back.

Our advice: book your test when your instructor tells you you’re approaching test standard. At MyDrivingInstructor.co.uk, your matched instructor will give you an honest, clear assessment of readiness — so you’re not wasting a precious test slot or a precious change.

Use our test centre finder to check which centres are near you and compare wait times before booking.

Step 4: Add Your Instructor’s Reference Number When You Book

Here’s something that hasn’t changed: your instructor still needs to be free on your test day. When you book your test through the DVSA system, you can enter your instructor’s personal reference number — the booking system will automatically check their availability.

Your MyDrivingInstructor.co.uk instructor will give you their reference number directly. This simple step ensures your test and your lessons align — no awkward clashes, no last-minute panic.

Step 5: Don’t Worry — You Have Expert Support Throughout

The legislation changes who presses the button — it doesn’t change the fact that you have experienced, professional support around you.

At MyDrivingInstructor.co.uk, we’ve been connecting learner drivers with quality approved driving instructors since 2016. Under the new rules:

  • Your instructor will guide you on when to book, where to book, and how to use your changes wisely
  • Our team is on hand to answer questions about the new system
  • Our intensive course packages are structured so your test readiness and test date align — removing guesswork

The DVSA’s changes are a step in the right direction for learners. We’re here to make sure the transition is smooth for you.

Frequently Asked Questions: Driving Test Booking Changes 2026

Can my driving instructor book my test for me after 12 May 2026?

No. From 12 May 2026, only you can manage your own booking.

How many times can I change my driving test booking?

From 31 March 2026, you are allowed a maximum of 2 changes to your driving test booking. If you need to make further changes after using both, you must cancel and rebook (with a full refund if cancelled 10+ working days before the test).

Can I still move my driving test to a different test centre?

Yes, but from 9 June 2026 you can only move your test to one of the 3 nearest test centres to where it is currently booked.

Does this affect motorcycle or lorry tests?

No. These changes apply to car driving tests only. Motorcycle and vocational tests are not affected by the May and June 2026 rule changes.

What happens to tests already booked by my instructor?

Any tests already booked before 12 May 2026 remain valid. Your instructor will share your test reference number with you so you can manage the booking yourself from that date.
