How Long Does a Driving Test Take?

April 16, 2026 by Viv Dutton

The Short Version

The UK practical driving test takes approximately 40 minutes from getting into the car to returning to the test centre. Allow around 70–80 minutes for your total time at the test centre from arrival to leaving. Here’s exactly what happens during that time.

How Long Does the Driving Test Take?

The practical driving test itself lasts approximately 40 minutes.

This is the time you spend actually driving — from leaving the test centre car park to returning to it. The examiner’s assessment covers everything that happens during this time.

But the 40 minutes is just the driving. Your total time at the test centre — from arriving to leaving — is typically 70–80 minutes when you factor in checking in, the pre-drive checks, the result, and a brief debrief.

What Happens During the 40 Minutes

The 40 minutes of driving covers several distinct sections. Here’s how the time breaks down:

🚗 What’s included in the 40 minutes

  • Independent driving — approximately 20 minutes. You drive without turn-by-turn directions from the examiner. You’ll either follow a sat nav or follow road signs to a destination. This is the longest single section of the test
  • Normal driving — the remainder. The examiner gives directions and assesses your driving on a variety of road types including residential streets, main roads, and where possible, dual carriageways
  • One manoeuvre. The examiner will ask you to perform one of the following: parallel parking, forward or reverse bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing. You won’t know which one until you’re asked
  • Possibly an emergency stop. Around one in three tests includes an emergency stop. It takes about 30 seconds but counts as part of the overall assessment

The route is chosen by the examiner and will vary. It’s designed to give a fair assessment of your driving on a range of road types and conditions.

Before the Test Starts

Before you get in the car, the examiner runs through two quick checks. These happen at the test centre before the clock starts on your 40 minutes.

The eyesight check

The examiner asks you to read a number plate from a set distance — currently 20 metres for a new-style number plate. This takes about 30 seconds.

❌ Fail the eyesight check and the test ends immediately

If you need glasses or contact lenses to drive, you must wear them. If you fail the eyesight check, the test is over before it begins and your fee is forfeited. Don’t forget your glasses.

The show me / tell me questions

The examiner asks you two vehicle safety questions — one before you set off and one while you’re driving. These take around 3–4 minutes in total.

Examples include: “Show me how you’d check the engine oil level” or “Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your power steering.” Getting one wrong counts as a minor fault. Getting both wrong also counts as just one minor fault.

The Independent Driving Section Explained

The independent driving section lasts around 20 minutes — roughly half the total test time. A lot of learners feel nervous about this section, but it’s worth understanding what it’s actually testing.

The examiner is not testing whether you can navigate perfectly. They’re testing whether you can drive safely and make sensible decisions while managing your own route.

💡 What to know about independent driving

  • You’ll either follow a sat nav (most common) or follow road signs to a destination the examiner describes
  • If you take a wrong turn — it doesn’t matter. The examiner is not marking your navigation. Just correct course safely and carry on
  • If you’re not sure where to go, it’s fine to ask the examiner to repeat the directions once
  • Keep driving safely regardless of where you are. That’s the only thing being assessed

After the Test — What Happens Next

When you return to the test centre, the examiner will ask you to park and then give you the result.

If you pass

The examiner will congratulate you and give you a pass certificate. You can choose to have your full licence sent automatically or apply separately. You can drive home immediately — though most people still go with their instructor for the first journey.

Your full driving licence will arrive by post, usually within 1–3 weeks.

If you don’t pass

The examiner will go through your result sheet with you, explaining each fault recorded. This takes around 5 minutes. Take the sheet away with you — it’s valuable information for your next attempt.

On MyDrivingInstructor.co.uk courses of 36 hours or more, if you don’t pass first time — we pay for your next test. We only advise pupils to book when their instructor is confident they’re ready. Find out more: What Happens If I Fail My Driving Test?

How Long to Allow for the Whole Day

Most pupils have a warm-up drive with their instructor before the test. This is strongly recommended — it settles nerves and gets you into driving mode before you meet the examiner.

⏱ How to plan your test day

  • Warm-up drive with instructor — allow 20–30 minutes before your test time
  • Arrive at the test centre — 10–15 minutes before your appointment
  • Time at the test centre — allow 70–80 minutes in total
  • Total time from leaving home to returning — plan for around 2–2.5 hours to be safe

If you have work, college, or other commitments on test day, make sure you’ve allowed enough time. Feeling rushed before your test adds unnecessary pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions learners ask most about how long the driving test takes:

How long is the UK driving test?

The practical driving test takes approximately 40 minutes of driving. Your total time at the test centre — including checking in, the eyesight check, show me/tell me questions, the result, and debrief — is typically 70 to 80 minutes.

How long is the independent driving section?

The independent driving section lasts approximately 20 minutes — roughly half the total test time. You’ll either follow a sat nav or road signs. Taking a wrong turn does not affect your result — only the safety of your driving matters.

How many manoeuvres are there in the driving test?

You will be asked to perform one manoeuvre during the test — either parallel parking, forward or reverse bay parking, or pulling up on the right and reversing. You may also be asked to do an emergency stop, which is separate from the main manoeuvre and happens in approximately one in three tests.

How long does it take to get your result after the driving test?

You receive your result immediately at the end of the test — the examiner tells you before you leave the car. If you pass, your full driving licence arrives by post within 1 to 3 weeks. If you don’t pass, you can rebook straight away.

Can the driving test be cut short?

Yes — in two circumstances. If you commit a dangerous fault the test will usually continue to completion but the result is already decided. If there is a safety concern — for example extreme weather or a problem with the vehicle — the examiner may end the test early and you will not be charged.

Does making a mistake early mean the test is over?

No. One serious or dangerous fault is an automatic fail, but the test always continues to completion. If you make a mistake early, reset and keep driving well — the examiner is watching everything, and strong driving after an error shows composure and ability.

How long should I allow for my driving test day?

Allow around 2 to 2.5 hours in total — including a warm-up drive with your instructor beforehand, time at the test centre, and travelling home. If you have other commitments that day, plan well ahead to avoid feeling rushed before you arrive.
